Food and drink in Charente Maritime

Charente specialises mainly in food and drink from the sea and vineyards. So book a table at a restaurant and feast on oysters, mussels and shellfish washed down with Charente wine. You can also pick up fresh produce from the market stalls.

Here you'll find local goat's cheese such as Mothais sur Feuille, Chabichou or Manslais. Whilst shopping at the fruit and vegetable store you won't be able to resist Charente melons and delicious Ile de Ré potatoes. You'll find more delicious treats to enhance your dishes in the herbs and spices aisle. Few people know that Charente-Maritime was once one of the biggest saffron producers in the world. A dozen producers still grow it today. Last but not least, no trip to Ile de Ré would be complete without picking up a bit of the region's white gold to take home with you.

If you've got a sweet tooth then treat yourself or someone special to the famous Galette Charentaise cake and Cornuelles (triangular biscuits).

Have fun cooking with family and friends and concocting delicious dishes with local flavours during your break. Tuck into mouth-watering meals and traditional treats on the many terraces where you can enjoy sea views and idyllic settings.

Bon appétit!
